While in their infancy, social networking sites have become an integral part of our students’ daily online activities. Taking note of this schools are now seeing social media sites as an avenue to spark their students’ interest. Their school websites now include tweets, Facebook pages, YouTube videos and blogs. These social feeds allow students to interact with each other, their teachers, and the outside network.
However, before instituting social sites as part of the school culture, school districts must acknowledge the purpose and reasons teens use social sites. A few questions to keep in mind are:
· What networks are teens using?
· What content and information are teens posting on social media sites?
· Are teens aware of privacy concerns?
In order to find answers to these questions, I recommend reading the information presented by the Pew research on Teen, Social Media, and Privacy. The Pew Research Internet Project, an unbiased organization that examines how Americans use the internet and how their activities affect their lives.
Using Piktochart I created an infographic to visually represent some of the information from the research.
