Videos & QR Codes in the Library

So it’s mid-July and we’re just one month shy from returning to our classrooms.  As I’m preparing for this new and exciting school year I started working on book trailers for some of the books we’ll be reading in class this year. Last year my students read Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. I could not believe how much students wanted to read the book; every day they begged to read it. I plan to start off the year with this novel and created a trailer using Animoto.com. I will let my students access the trailer through QR Codes. I love QR Codes and use them religiously for instructions, questions, photos, quizzes, etc. I swear that my students get so excited to scan the code and find out what the will be doing that day.

QR Codes are easy to create, I use QRStuff.com, and can be used in the classroom, on campus, or even the library. Using them in the library could be very helpful, you can link book trailers, provide info on what you can find in each section, book reviews, the possibilities are endless. Below is a quick tutorial on QR codes and the code for my trailer.

Scan and enjoy!

How to create a QR Code.
1. Choose the data type you will be using.
2. Insert link or text.
3. Choose your color.
4. Choose output type.
5. Don't forget to download, print, and share your code.

Lastly, I'd like to share 8 YouTube videos that will make your job a lot easier. See the videos and steal some ideas or use them in your classroom or library.

  1. Poetry for Students is a screencast that provides students with all the necessary information they need to access the school and district resources. I liked that the librarian points out that the resources they need are already there available to them and that they can use it at home or library. Students can watch this video and learn how to appropriately conduct research, cite their information, and avoiding plagiarism.

2. NHS Library Orientation Every library should have a library orientation video. I think that students will like being able to see this video before they head to the library for the first time. The librarian provides clear and concise information about the collection, services, and rules and procedures.

    3. Finding CC Images Using Compfight. How many times have I assigned projects and found my students using copyrighted images? Who knew this short video could be so helpful? Students will learn how to access creative common images they will be able to use for their photos. The process is simple and solves copyright infringement issues.

   4. Learn About the Author's Den Creative Writing Club @ The Unquiet Library! This video can be a great recruitment video. Students will learn more about what takes place in the creative writing club. I think students will enjoy listening to one of their peers share her thoughts and experience she took away from the meeting.

    5. AP English 12 Pikesville HS Library has a series of AP course introductions. In this AP English course, students will hear from an AP teacher and two students who are currently taking AP courses. It provides good information to students about requirement and expectations. I like that students were involved because it allows others to hear from their experiences and tips.

6. The Panthers Library in Action - Fall 2013 This video is comprised of student photographs taken at the campus library. It details the activities that take place in the library and how students use it. This is a great way to market the library as a place where students gather to learn and socialize. Students who watch this video will enjoy being able to see themselves and their friends featured at the library.

   BBMS Media Channel

   7. MLA Citation Review This is a video lecture where students will learn proper MLA citation. It is important for students to learn how to cite and the reasons we cite. These are skills that students lack, but will need in throughout their lives.
